What's a Gameologist™?
Red Raccoon's Gameologists™ are widely renowned as the foremost experts in all things tabletop gaming.
Just ask them. They'll tell you.
But being a Gameologist™ isn't really about knowing the Armor Class of an Owlbear or being able to identify every Magic set symbol since 1993.
It's about people.
Our Gameologists™ help thousands of customers—from lifelong hobby gamers to people who have absolutely no idea what they're looking for.
A customer might walk in wanting a new strategy game for their regular Saturday-night group. The next person might need a birthday present for a 10-year-old. Someone else may have heard their grandkid say something about "Warhammer" and now needs you to explain why they're looking at a wall containing several hundred tiny plastic people.
Helping all of those customers is the job.
What does a Gameologist™ actually do?
First and foremost, Gameologists™ provide exceptional customer service.
You'll greet customers, ask questions, make recommendations, help people find products, answer phones, operate our point-of-sale system, stock merchandise, straighten shelves, help with events, and generally make sure people leave Red Raccoon happier than when they arrived.
You don't need to know every game in the store.
Nobody does.
But you do need to be curious, willing to learn, and comfortable saying, "I don't know, but let's find out."
Game knowledge is definitely a plus. A broad familiarity with board games, role-playing games, trading card games, miniatures, or other tabletop hobbies will make the job easier.
But we'd rather hire someone who's friendly, dependable, curious, and great with customers than someone who knows everything about games but doesn't enjoy talking to people.
Yes. There's cleaning.
Quite a bit, actually.
We work very hard to make Red Raccoon different from the stereotypical game store.
That means cleaning bathrooms. Emptying trash. Vacuuming and mopping floors. Wiping tables. Cleaning glass. Straightening shelves. Picking up after events. And occasionally discovering something under a gaming table that raises questions nobody really wants answered.
Everyone cleans.
If your idea of working at a game store is sitting behind the counter playing games all day, we're probably going to disappoint you.
When do Gameologists™ work?
Retail happens when customers aren't at work.
That means evenings and weekends are a normal part of working at Red Raccoon.
Our busiest periods are nights, weekends, major releases, holidays, and special events. Availability during those times is important when we're deciding whom to hire and how many hours we're able to offer.
We don't expect everyone to have unlimited availability, but applicants should expect to work at least one weekend shift each week. Greater weekend and evening availability generally means we're able to offer more hours.
Do I need retail experience?
Nope.
Previous retail, sales, restaurant, hospitality, or customer-service experience is helpful, but it isn't required.
We're happy to hire people for their first retail job.
We're much more interested in whether you:
- Enjoy helping people
- Can comfortably start conversations with strangers
- Show up when you're scheduled
- Can work as part of a team
- Pay attention to details
- Can stay productive without someone constantly telling you what to do
- Are willing to learn
- Can remain friendly when the store is busy
- Can handle basic math, alphabetizing, and organization
- Can safely lift and handle merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds
And yes, knowing something about tabletop games certainly helps.
You don't have to know everything.
But knowing why Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40,000, and Catan aren't all basically the same thing is a pretty good start.

All kinds of people.
Our staff includes serious hobby gamers, casual gamers, role-playing fans, miniature painters, TCG players, board gamers, parents, students, teachers, and people who simply enjoy helping customers find cool stuff.
You don't have to look, think, play, or geek out exactly like everyone else here.
In fact, that's kind of the point.
Different customers walk through our doors every day, and having a team with different interests, experiences, and perspectives makes us better at serving them.
