Settlers of Catan

Trade some sheep for some wood? This game is a classic. It’s been around since 1995 and once you’ve played it, it is easy to see why. This is another easy to learn game with some complex strategical possibilities. You play as settlers moving into a new land. You have to claim land wisely, as each type of land generates unique resources which you’ll need to accomplish… well…. everything. (It’s tough to build without wood, for instance. No grain means you go hungry. You get the idea.) The object is to reach the required number of victory points before your opponents do. One interesting spin to the game is the ability to trade. While it’s fun to stick it to your oppnents every chance you get (and you do get some), you’re going to need them (well, their resources anyway) at some point. A typical game lasts somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-90 minutes. You can play with 3 or 4 players with the base set. Numerous expansion sets are available, allowing you to increase that to 5 or 6, or even play with 2.

You may have seen it being played on The Big Bang Theory.
